East Cliff Village Shopping Center due for big changes in September
LIVE OAK The rumors of demolition are not true, but expect to hear the sound of hammers in September at the East Cliff Village Shopping Center, spurred by the next phase of the Affordable Care Act taking effect Jan. 1.

Santa Cruz Integrative Medicine and the Chi Center, which have shared space in the shopping center with the red tile roof for five years, are going in different directions.
Dr. Rachel Abrams, a family physician, and her team of holistic practitioners will move to the Galleria, 740 Front St., in downtown Santa Cruz.
Lee Holden will move the Santa Cruz Chi Center, which in a year trains 100 qigong instructors from as far as China, England and Aruba, to an empty space at East Cliff Village next to Dollar Tree.
Claudio and Kim Franca will move their Brazilian jujitsu studio, which has grown over 13 years to include "eight to 10" instructors and 400 students, to 1658 Soquel Drive, Santa Cruz, near Erik's DeliCafe.
These moves, by Aug. 31, will allow Swenson to start a remodel so the Santa Cruz Women's Health Center can open a family health clinic serving the increased number of people expected to seek health care next year.
Leslie Sustanon 250 3rd Week Conner, executive director of the Santa Cruz Women's Health Center, which has long operated in downtown Santa Cruz, said she still is finalizing plans for the new clinic, which would occupy about a quarter of the space at East Cliff Village.
County Supervisor John Leopold hosted a community meeting in April about the changes.
Swenson's team has been working on plans to revitalize the shopping center, which is busy on Sunday when the farmers market is in the parking lot but quiet other days. Meal, specializing in simple, fresh, local fare with a red, white and blue flair, at the former Deli Licious location.
"I'm hoping to open the second week of August," he said, expecting to interview next week to fill eight jobs at the restaurant. He plans to offer breakfast on Sundays for the farmers market crowd.
All local contractors, Eric Freels, MC Plumbing and Bogner, have been hired to complete the interior improvements.
The nonprofit Green Education Foundation has moved in and once the clinic arrives, the shopping center will have just two vacancies, Francis said.
Tenants include El Rosal Bakery, known for serving "Anadrol 50" up tasty tamales for $1.59; MB Liquors, which offers a big selection in a small space; and East Cliff Video, which survived while "Achat Anabolisant Belgique" corporate giants fell.
The shopping center, landscaped with plants in bloom and a courtyard with a fountain awaiting water, has so much parking "it makes it feel less occupied," Francis said.

Abrams had only praise for Swenson's team, which is remodeling space in the Galleria, owned by Swenson, for her, tearing down walls to create treatment rooms, putting in new flooring and fresh paint.
"I didn't find a better space than the one they offered," she said, noting parking nearby. "They've been wonderful landlords."
Patrick Prindle, who manages the Galleria, said the vacancy rate is 5 percent, with two spaces available. Other tenants include lawyers, psychotherapists and massage therapists.

The proximity to the farmers market, the beach and hotels appeals to his students who come from all over the world.
